ABOUT

We are specialized in compact and sustainable design solutions for terrestrial and extra-terrestrial environments.

Wir gestalten minimalistische, funktionale Lebensräume, entwickeln clevere Raumlösungen und erforschen das Zusammenspiel von Mensch, Pflanze, Objekt und Raum unter extremen Bedingungen. Unsere Fragen lauten: Was macht einen Ort lebenswert? Für wen gestalten wir? Was passiert – und warum? Aus Erfahrungen mit Extremene – Astronaut:innen und Pionierpflanzen leiten wir Prinzipien für Mikrowohnen, Mikrogemeinschaften, Ressourcennutzung, Lebensqualität und Mensch-Technik-Interaktion ab.

We design minimalist, functional habitats, develop clever and smart space solutions, and explore how people, plants, objects, and space interact in extreme environments. Our guiding questions: What makes a place livable? Who are we designing for? What happens – and why? From working with the Extreme – with astronauts and ruderal plants, we derive principles for micro-living, small-scale societies, resource use, quality of life, and human-technology integration.

Was wir machen

Sandra Häuplik-Meusburger

Architect and researcher specializing in compact habitability design solutions for extreme environments. She applies her expertise to sustainable, modular, and adaptable architectural solutions, always with a strong focus on the user. This often involves implies rethinking and reconfiguring of the exisitng context.

Based at TU Wien, she instructs and guides Space Architecture design studios at universities across Europe, the US, and Asia. She serves as the Academic Director for the Executive MBA in Space Architecture & Management at TU Wien and the Science Academy’s Space course in Lower Austria. She is Academician at the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), Chair of the IAA History committee and former chair of the Space Architecture Technical Committee (SATC) of AIAA and the Space Habitats Committee of the IAF.

Her book publications include Architecture for Astronauts – An Activity Based Approach (Springer, 2011), Space Architecture Education for Engineers and Architects – Designing and Planning Beyond Earth (Springer, 2016, 2nd ed. 2026), and Space Habitats and Habitability – Designing for Isolated and Confined Environments on Earth and in Space (Springer, 2021), and Weltraum – Extreme Lebensraeume und deren Bewohnbarkeit (Springer, 2025).
